Megapixels – How High?
When one is shopping for a digital camera they will often want to know how many megapixels is the resolution of the camera. When the first digital camera was introduced the resolution of the camera was only 0.3 megapixels. You will be hard-pressed today to find a digital camera that doesn’t have at least 7 megapixels. The resolution of the camera is defined by its megapixels. One megapixel is actually one million pixels. A pixel is a square of color which makes up the digital images we take with our cameras.
In order to define how many megapixels a camera has you must first understand how a digital camera works. Digital cameras have an image sensor that takes light and converts it into electrical charges. The sensor is called a CCD (Charged Couple Device) and is most often made up of silicon and has photo detectors on it; the amount of photo detectors on the CCD will define the megapixels count of the camera.
If you are planning on having larger pictures then having a camera with a higher megapixel count is appropriate. This is only needed if you are into photography because the size of the prints will be bigger than ones that you will find in a family album. Actually if photography is not one of your passions you do not need a camera that has a resolution more than 3.2 megapixels. The higher the megapixels count on your camera the more visual noise that the camera will capture. The sensor may not be able to handle the amount of megapixels your camera contains. Larger images will also take up the space of your memory card. If you are only going to use your camera on special occasions then there is no need to go any higher than 10 megapixels.
Now that you understand what megapixels are about you can look for other things besides a high number of megapixels. Just like the best occupational therapy jobs may not be the ones at the largest hospitals/medical facilities the right camera for you may not be one with high amount of megapixels.
